FAQs for Teaching Classes

Many new instructors have questions and you should never be afraid to ask. Chances are someone’s already asked it before you! Take a look at these frequently asked questions and see if they solve your quandary.

Do I have to teach on my left side?

Yes, as a fitness instructor delivering to a class you will need to show effective mirroring. As participants are mostly right-sided dominant, as an instructor you will teach on the left to make it easy for your participants to follow.

What if I have never taught before?

Don’t panic; our courses are designed to equip you with the skills in order to deliver you own group exercise class. We do recommend you attend a few group exercise classes in order to gain and understanding of the structure.

If you are taking one of our duo qualifications, you’ll learn your training for this discipline on your training day prior to EMD UK course day. This will give you tons of information!

What support will I get after my course?

You will get ongoing support from our Instructor Support Officer (hi Paula!) and EMD UK. If you have accepted the our Open Bursary, you will also gain an instructor support package from us for one year, free of charge. This is packed full of great discounts and support to kick-start your career as a fitness instructor!

What I am required to do for the assessments days at the end of my course?

Your tutor will support you both pre- and post-course. Here’s a quick breakdown of what assessments you’ll take:

Practical assessment: Using the session plan you will have been working on throughout your course, you will deliver this 30 – 40 minute class to a number of participants. You will find out your results on the day.

Theory assessments: One multiple choice theory exam on the Principles of Anatomy, Physiology and Fitness which lasts 1hr 45mins’
