The world of sport and fitness insurance is evolving. With rising insurance claim costs, EMD UK has increased the liability cover included in our group exercise instructor membership at no extra cost to our members.
Our insurance partner, Howden Insurance, recently highlighted that now’s a good time for sports clubs and instructors to review their liability limits.
According to an article in their Otium publication, “Traditionally, the recommended limit of indemnity has been set at £10 million but it is becoming increasingly clear that this may no longer be enough in the worst-case scenario.”
In a case that started in 2017 and took six years to resolve, a 24-year-old man suffered life-changing paraplegic injuries during a non-contact outdoor sport. By the time the case concluded, the claim had reached almost £13 million.
In response to this, Andy Goulbourne, Head of Client Service at Howden Sport & Entertainment, said:
“This case should be a wake-up call for clubs and national governing bodies that haven’t reviewed their limits of indemnity because, in our opinion, these figures are only going to rise. If the same incident happened again now, by the time it was settled we could potentially be looking at a claim of £15 million.”
