EMD UK, previously known as EMDP (The Exercise Movement & Dance Partnership), was constituted in 2006 to facilitate and support dance fitness organisations.

Since then, EMD UK has continued to grow and change to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market.

In early 2016 we became the national governing body for group exercise, with a remit to support and grow the sector. We work in partnership with Sport England to deliver the government’s national physical activity agenda. To achieve this, we are finding ways to engage with the 11.5m people in the UK that currently do no form of physical activity and introduce them to group exercise opportunities.

Positive change

Group exercise is an exciting and diverse mix of styles and activities that caters to ‘someone like me’ and everyone should have the opportunity to take part. EMD UK is committed to driving positive change within the industry and we believe that through cooperation and collaboration with industry bodies, understanding and removing the barriers that prevent people from taking part and by supporting instructors to deliver excellence, we can achieve a healthier nation through exercise.

Open to all

We want to make our sector accessible for everyone and we work with a wide range of organisations, from commercial operators to local communities and national providers, to ensure there are multiple access routes for all ages, abilities and interests to take part.

We’ve created an industry-leading find a class website, classfinder, to make it as easy as possible for people to find group exercise classes in their local area.

We work on a variety of different projects, aimed at encouraging more people to get active through group exercise. The opportunities we provide create positive impacts on the health of many. We work closely with This Girl Can and the NHS, as well as Sport England projects to get inactive people moving.
