Who are theMovement?

TheMovement exists to break down barriers to exercise for women who have experienced domestic violence, sexual exploitation, homelessness and correlated disadvantages. We aim to do this through two projects:

Charity Exercise Sessions
We are partnered with over 20 charities across London delivering weekly free, trauma informed exercise sessions to their beneficiaries. These sessions are delivered by our volunteer instructors – fitness professionals who generously give their time and skills weekly to be part of restoring every woman’s right to exercise. We also provide exercise clothing, footwear and equipment for participants as needed.

Our Trauma Informed Training
We have developed a one day CIMSPA endorsed CPD course for fitness professionals called A Trauma Informed Approach to Exercise Provision. This course uniquely supports instructors to recognise the impact of trauma in our clients and provides lots of practical tips and suggestions for creating safe and welcoming exercise sessions for all.

Why choose theMovement?

With an estimated one in five adults having experienced child abuse [ONS 2020] and 1 in 4 women experiencing domestic violence at some point in their lifetime [Refuge, 2022], it has been reported that 70% of the world’s population surveyed has experienced trauma. [WHO 2017]. This is a huge amount of the UK population who are facing more barriers to exercise and movement.

By adopting a trauma informed approach, you are creating a safe and welcoming place for those who have experienced trauma to access the incredible and powerful resource of exercise and movement.
