Meet EMD UK Non-Executive Director, Stuart Armstrong

Following the announcement about the changes to our board of directors, we are running a short blog series to introduce all of our non-executive directors to our EMD UK community.

In this one, we introduce EMD UK Board Non-Executive Director Stuart Armstrong, Managing Director of Future Coach, a workforce development agency that specialises in transformational coach education and development experiences for sport organisations.

His career has spanned senior roles at Sport England, where he served as Strategic Lead for Workforce Transformation,  England Rugby UK Coaching and England Golf, giving him a system-level understanding of how sport workforces are built, sustained and improved.

At Future Coach, Stuart leads the strategic direction and client relationships across a portfolio that includes Red Bull Racing, The FA, British Gymnastics, USA Hockey, Activity Alliance, England Golf, and Women in Sport.

He sits on the CIMSPA Coach Developer Professional Standard Expert Group and hosts The Talent Equation podcast, interviewing researchers and practitioners at the frontier of coaching, talent development and skill acquisition.

Stuart says:

“I spent 8 years at Sport England working on increasing the diversity and inclusivity of the sport and physical activity workforce. I came to learn that group exercise is the most popular way many people (especially women) in this country choose to stay active. Whether in a community centre, faith building or a village hall you’ll find a group exercise instructor (usually a woman) fitting the work around the school run, giving people who’d never go near a gym a reason to turn up. That’s exercise on the doorstep for the people who need it most.”

“I joined the board at EMDUK because a workforce doing that much good, in that many places, deserves to be recognised and supported properly. After years spent arguing that a more diverse and inclusive workforce is the thing that makes everything else possible, this felt like the place to keep making that case.I’m proud to be able to support the brilliant team at EMDUK to champion group exercise and support the people who make it happen”
