King’s College London asked EMD UK to deliver a bespoke “Intro to Dance Fitness” class

EMD UK’s Academy Manager, Carolyn Allen, was asked by King’s College London to deliver a bespoke “Intro to Dance Fitness” class for a group of 10 students who are employed at King’s Sport for their BeActive programme.  BeActive is a social and recreational activity programme which offers over 80 non-competitive and inclusive activities every week to all students and staff. The student activators run every session, to keep them social and fun, and provide feedback to the University.

Over the summer, more categories were added to keep the timetable as diverse as possible.  The aim of the bespoke class was to equip the student activators with the knowledge and confidence to take a session should the dance teacher be unable to attend.  The course is not related to the students’ degrees, or necessarily what they want to do in the future but is to add value in the  fitness/wellbeing programme that the University offers.

The students experienced two different types of master classes – one where they copied the instructor’s movements and one that was choreography-based where they learned to build on a dance routine.  The class also split into groups and learned how to develop some sample session plans based on a variety of dance disciplines, as well as boxercise, HIIT, yoga or Pilates, depending on their particular interest or discipline.

The students were also given work manuals and certificates of attendance. The feedback from the class was very positive – ‘Carolyn is very inspirational and a lovely lady’ while Stephanie said ‘Just wanted to thank you for a fantastic class today, we all really enjoyed it!

EMD UK offers a number of group exercise instructor qualifications, including Level 2 Group Training to Music or Level 2 Dance Fitness.  For any aspiring instructors who have found they style they want to teach, then we have teamed up with some great group exercise organisations to offer a Duo Qualification consisting of a Level 2 qualification together with style specific training.

Alternatively, if you have a cohort of learners or need a course that works around you, then we have bespoke options available and Carolyn will be able to discuss your requirements with you.
